And some extras...

Sorry for flooding the blog tonight. I found these in my album and I felt they were relevant to this class.

1. This roadbed in hawaii was covered by molten rock. The only way to tell where the road lies beneath is this telltale sign sticking out of the rocks. The sign remains, reminding any drivers that parking there is illegal, fufilling it's uty long after it's purpose has ended. Roadsigns are very interesting, as they are disigned to be plain, and straigtforward reminders of direction and the law. But, can even something with such a clear-cut purpose have it's meaning be totally changed?

The answer is yes. There is a sign right there that says so, without saying it at all.

2. and 3. The other picture that i tool was of this Truck that i saw in little saigon (this was actually taken for another project.)

This Truck was built and designed my a motor company. A business bought the truck. The truck was pure white and had large blank panels for sides. On the side of the truck, the business saw billboards. It added the company name and information to the truck. Later, "taggers" saw the side of the truck as a canvas, with which to create their tag. "If only the owners would not have tainted the canvas with advertising." thinks the tagger. When the owner finds their truck painted, they become dismayed and think "if only the tagger had not have tainted my advertising with their vandalism".

The truck continues its duties driving around, and in it's process I saw it. On the side I saw a struggle between two lifestyles, Both painting on the same canvas to create a piece that has perhaps more character, honesty and realism than a piece of fine art. I believe there is some beauty in that, though in the end it looks like a mess.

Unexpected beauty Assignment

When i was first learning to draw, the first time i experimented with one point perspective was something great to me; it added such a sense of realism to artwork. Perhaps I personally find scenes with intense perspective angles visually appealing, or maybe it is simply the sense of openness and freedom that comes with a depth of space. Either way, I took these pictures of some areas in reality where you might find this form of space. 1. This is (or was) a river that runs very nearby the school, in fountain valley. It seems more like a canal nowdays, as the city was built around the river, it too became a member of the city. 2. Power lines in santa ana, near bristol street, on either side of a road 3. picture 3 i didn't take specifically for this class, it was from an album from a trip to hawaii i once took, but i added it because it really gives the sense of perspective i was trying to capture in this week's photographs.

From the field trip early on...

I know this trip was a while ago but I thought I'd throw these up here for everyone. Just for reference these were taken from the Laguna Museum of Art during the woW exhibit (they were in the legal picture taking area).

Daddy Long Legs vs. House Spider

Sooo I think bugs are disgusting, and spiders freak me out more than almost anything, but I saw this video a couple months ago and I think it's insane, and I love showing it to people, so here it it:

Daddy long legs vs. house spider

raunchy right!??

check out the daddy long leg's foot action while it's wrapping up the spider...freakin sick. Sick as in both gross AND really cool.

Unexpected Beauty

I've always liked the way thing look when they are given the chance to age or deteriorate.

Part 2

Lindsay Baker--Unexpected Beauty

The Quay Brothers are a pair of twin brothers who do some really interesting stop motion animation. I learned about them from someone in another one of my classes, and I thought this assignment would be a good opportunity to share their work, because as you'll see if you watch "Crocodile Street" (parts 1 and 2 are linked below), the imagery is kind of strange and dark, pretty creepy even...very odd and eerie...but I find it beautiful.

Crocodile Street by the Brothers Quay

Part 1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ohfgqdW4-2k

Part 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MTr2icsjMx4&feature=related

You should try to see this in better quality.

It's incredible to me because the film is made of a bunch of little trinkets that the brothers picked up on a trip to Poland I believe (don't mark my words, I might not remember correctly), and without any words and such limited visuals, so much is said. A story is told and emotions are apparent...It's pretty cool.

It also interests me because so much focus is paid to these little bitty parts, and these subtle movements. Everything seems much bigger, and after watching something like this, I start seeing smaller things around me and paying more attention to what I might have overlooked before: the mechanism of a movement, how light interacts with the world around us, etc.

The Dragon Fruit

This is a Dragon fruit. During my recent trip to Thailand, I saw this fruit quite alot in the side streets of the city. Sidewalk vendors were selling them. I was very curious yet hesitant to even try this fruit as it looked very weird and intimidating (i think.) Bright colored fruits look dangerous...

...and this one was dangerously good! I didn't expect this weird looking fruit to taste so good! it was a very refreshing bite after so much walking under the tropical heat. You just can't imagine how this fruit tastes by looking at it on the outside and the inside...you'd have to try it to know. Just by looking at it, i couldnt tell whether it was sweet or salty or sour or bland. although it looked more on the bland side because it was snow white with little black dots, which were edible seeds. it tastes and feels like a cross between a kiwi and a pear.

any other crazy fruits out there that you know of?

Unexpected beauty pics

Saw this in my backyard when I moved into my new place. There is just something about the old rustic saddle and wood nailed together, to nothing, surrounded by this lush new vines. Complementing old and new in a harmonious environment.

During a party I had gone to I noticed the ceiling was decaying, as well as the walls. Pieces were falling off in front of me and I thought it was humorous for the fact that this was built to last, to support a man made environment, to create a place where one could wash themselves and yet, after many years, it starts to fall apart. It's a beautiful reminder that what we build won't last forever. I think it's nice sometimes when you don't have to worry about having a place completely clean. It's beautiful to watch nature takes its course on your life. It's always reminding us that we won't last forever.

Strange Noises

Here is a video that I found with interestingly beautiful sounds but at the same time very strange!

UNEXPECTED BEAUTY

Something that I find beautiful that is unexpected is seaweed. I like it because to me the organic shape and texture, and the way it flows underwater makes seaweed seem almost alien like, as if it would be like a normal tree or plant on some alien planet somewhere. The little pods on the seaweed remind me of flower buds and for some reason when I see them I think it would be cool if little small things could live in them.

Unexpected Beauty Pictures

The pictures of the monstrous plant is actually a street lamp in my neighborhood that had been consumed by an overgrown bush. No one ever thought to trim it, so it kept growing until the street light could no longer be seen, thus resembling a monster-like creature.
Everytime I pass through a desert area, I pass by power lines that I think emulate lambs. I think the overall scenery looks pretty cool becuase it looks like a field of overgrown lambs towering over tiny cars.

Updates

Not everyone has emailed my on your intentions for the field trip, so please do so ASAP.

Also, only one person has motioned interest in the slab city venture, so I am going to cancel this trip. Gas is high, and since a student can not ride with me and it makes no sense for a car pool of two people in two cars, I will plan this at another time.... besides, with the heat the way it is, it could potentially be miserable.

I am going to extend the date of making a show for another week. Some have emailed interest in other shows which can be related to our class and I am ok with this. Email me the details, however.

Keep your records.

Beauty Project- be sure to post your images or have them ready for class on Monday. We are going to "show and tell".

The guest panel has been moved to week ten, as two people are out of town on business- this means we will be having a regular class period.

any questions- email me.

Deep Sinking-

The walls in my room had been too loud with their scribbles of colors and fat lines of duct tape. Visitors would pass though and make their marks on any given free space in my room while we worked on projects.  There wasn't much empty space for you to relax your eyes. No room for thought, just a room filled of meaningless acts of hand masturbation.  It were as if the walls were screaming creativity with out any direction . I wanted my work to take a different direction and I thought, by eliminating the clutter textures layered upon my walls I could start fresh.
Everyone enjoys that fresh feeling of a cleared palette, with you the creator, ready to dive into new works. With me being too eager to wait on a ride to the paint store to purchase a new interior color, I reacted upon impulse and grabbed any can of paint lying within arms length. It was a free can, but it just so happened to be black. I thought nothing of the shade until I had finished. I had never really been a true believer in how painting your walls in your room a certain hue would invoke a different feeling. As dumb as it sounds I thought it was all a myth and was something your mind could over come. But it's true! My room turned into a cave, my mood seemed more rejective; almost like a sinking feeling. Oddly enough the easiest way to describe this incident are through these photos I had taken of my clean up that night.

Monster sandwich

So I made this sandwich with turkey breast, grilled egg, grilled onions with salt and pepper seasoning, tomato, spinach, baby herb greens, between two large slices of cracked wheat sourdough bread. Not only did it taste great it looked freaky. Definitely a looker.

week 6 hw

I had the opportunity to go back home to Bakersfield for the weekend and every couple months when I do get to go back home a feeling of nostalgia usually occurs at some point or another. The first two pictures are of an alley directly behind my grandma's house where I spent much of my childhood exploring and playing in. The second two pictures are of various items that have been handed down my family for years that were actually property of my family when my ancestors moved from Oklahoma years ago during the California dust bowl. Relics such as these can be seen all over mine and other family member houses as a reminder from where we came from and the hardships others endured just to get here to California. I guess this tops hits for me since they are beautiful in a personal way.
